Mine Art Gallery welcomes the new season with Nurcan Perdahcı’s exhibition in its Istanbul branch.
In her works, Nurcan Perdahcı examines Usak carpets which are very important in the traditional culture of the city of Usak which is also her birthplace and she also explores the existence of these carpets in Western Art. In a contemporary approach, the artist takes up the way of these carpets through the phenomenon of time and space in Western art especially in the 16th and 17th centuries as a product of Eastern Culture. In spatial and temporal context, the artist questioning her family history and the history and the culture of the place she lived brings the objectified carpets in the hundred years of paintings to the forefront by making them the primary subject of her works. By using many different traditional – contemporary techniques and materials together, the artist addresses to the representer and the represented by referring to the leading examples of European art in the 16th and 17th centuries in a “deconstructionist” way. She replaces the subject and the object elements in the Western art. She deconstracts the Turkish carpets which are the object in Western art and makes them the subject in her works. With sometimes transparent and sometimes permeable temporal and spatial layers, the artist creates new existential dimensions for carpets, their presence, carpet weavers, and the paintings that we see carpets, so the great carpet masters and the cultures which creates all. From today’s perspective, Perdahcı approaches these carpets which are the products of Eastern culture in a critical and contemporary understanding. Evaluating her artistic production as a journey, the artist plasticizes her impressions from local to global, from East to West, from West to today. She meets with artists and art lovers at Mine Art Gallery with her works that she reconstructs with her contemporary interventions on concept and imagery by using all means of plastic arts.
Nurcan Perdahcı’s exhibition can be seen at Mine Art Gallery in Istanbul between 11 – 30 October 2016.
